The FestFinds Concert Index: Which US Cities Punch Above Their Weight in Live Music

We count every upcoming music event on sale through Ticketmaster in 56 major US cities — then divide by population to see which cities actually live and breathe live music. We refresh the index monthly; here’s the August picture, and it moved.
What changed in August
Grand Rapids just overtook Nashville. The Michigan sleeper added inventory month-over-month and now sits #3 per capita (134 shows per 100k) — ahead of Music City itself (132). New York posted the biggest absolute gain, up ~170 events as the fall season loads in — including all 30 nights of Harry Styles’ MSG residency. And Las Vegas extended its lead: 2,626 upcoming shows, 398 per 100k residents — still two and a half times anyone else.
Key findings
1. Las Vegas isn’t just first — it’s a different sport. 398 shows per 100k people. The residency economy at work: see what’s playing in Vegas.
2. Atlanta out-punches Nashville. The hip-hop capital holds #2 per capita at 156 — comfortably ahead of the country capital.
3. New York has the volume, not the density. 2,027 upcoming concerts is second only to Vegas — but spread across 8.3 million people, that’s ~25 shows per 100k, near the bottom of our index.
4. The mid-size sleepers are real. Grand Rapids (#3) and Charleston, SC (#12) prove you don’t need a million residents to have a big-league concert calendar.

Methodology
Counts are upcoming events classified as Music on sale via the Ticketmaster Discovery API (snapshots July 9 and August 10, 2026), matched to the venue’s listed city. City-proper boundaries apply — metro areas are not aggregated, which is why, for example, Miami (whose biggest venues list neighboring cities) reads lower than its metro reality. Populations: US Census Bureau city estimates. All 56 tracked cities have live, filterable listings on our city pages.
